20 MUST KNOW RULES OF GOLF

  1. Drop from knee height (Not shoulder height)  
  2. Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) 
  3. Drop in and play from the relief area 
  4. When dropping back-on-the-line, your ball cannot be played nearer the hole than your chosen reference point 
  5. Time to search is now 3 minutes 
  6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty 
  7. No penalty for a double hit 
  8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke 
  9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flag-stick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole 
  10. Spike marks and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired 
  11. Ball accidentally moved on the putting green - no penalty and replace  
  12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position - replace ball on the original spot 
  13. Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough 
  14. You can't take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area 
  15. In bunkers you can move loose impediments 
  16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area in front of or right behind your ball, during your back swing or in taking practice swings 
  17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but "embedded" means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) 
  18. Unplayable ball in bunker - extra option to drop outside the bunker for 2 penalty strokes 
  19. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance 
  20. Pace of Play - it is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is encouraged

LOCAL RULE - Out Of Bounds (Rule 27)

On or over any wall and beyond any fence, hedge or white stakes or lines defining the boundaries of the course, including driving range, car park behind the 18th hole and paved area around the club house.

LOCAL RULE - Water Hazards

  1. Water hazards are defined by yellow stakes and/or lines
  2. Lateral Water Hazards are defined by red stakes and/or lines
  3. At the Water Hazard on the 16th hole, as an additional option to those available under Rule 26-1, players may drop a ball in the identified Dropping Zone

LOCAL RULE - Ground Under Repair (Rule 25-1)

  1. All areas enclosed by white lines
  2. Tractor ruts made by green-keeping equipment
  3. The Tree Plantations defined by blue stakes and/or lines are areas of Ground Under Repair from which play is prohibited. If a player's ball lies in the area or it interferes with the player's stance or in the area of their intended swing the player must take relief under Rule 25-1
  4. Cultivated areas of flower beds
  5. The practice bunkers on the Practice Chipping area at the back of the 9th green.

LOCAL RULE - Immovable Obstruction (Rule 24-2)

  1. All staked tress not within plantation areas
  2. Electrical Junction Boxes and Drain Covers
  3. All marker posts, ie distance and water hazards
  4. Telegraph poles on the 13th hole
If a ball strikes the telegraph wire running across the 13th fairway, the stroke MUST be cancelled and replayed without penalty by dropping the ball as near as possible to the spot from where the ball was played. If the stroke was played from the tee, it can be re-teed within the teeing ground. If the ball is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted.

LOCAL RULE - Integral Parts of the Course

  1. The stone bridge over the burn on the 13th hole
  2. The large stones behind the 15th green

LOCAL RULE - Paths

Lift and drop from any artificial surfaced path or road within the course boundary.

The Practice Green on the Pitching and Chipping area behind the 9th green are Wrong Greens - relief must be taken on accordance with Rule 25-3
Stones in bunkers are movable obstructions - relief to be taken in accordance with Rule 24-1
On the Putting Green and Fairway, a ball which has come to rest in or an Aeration Hole may be lifted and places at the nearest spot not nearer the hole which avoids the condition

LOCAL RULE - Practice and Putting Area

Markers on the fairways show distances to the CENTRE of the Greens 

  • Red = 200 yards 
  • White = 150 yards 
  • Yellow 100 yards
